Directions for Interpretive Listening Selected-Response Questions

For the Interpretive Listening section of the test, you will listen to audio recordings containing spoken messages in the target language and answer selected-response questions written in the target language based on each message.

For each audio recording, a preview of the test questions associated with the spoken message will be presented on the screen. The audio recording will begin playing automatically. Once the audio recording begins, you will not be able to pause, stop, or replay it.

There will be 90 seconds of silence at the beginning of each audio recording. During these 90 seconds, you should familiarize yourself with the test questions. You may need to scroll down to preview all the questions. You will not be able to select your response choices during this preview.

After the 90 seconds of silence, you will hear a spoken message. Listen carefully. Each spoken message will be played twice. After the spoken message has played twice, move to the next screen to begin answering the questions.

Please be aware that the visual enhancements Example of the Color Scheme visual enhancement control and Example of the Font Size visual enhancement control cannot be adjusted during the Interpretive Listening section of the test. You must make any desired adjustments now before you select "Next" to begin the Interpretive Listening section. You will not be able to adjust these features again until you have completed this section of the test.

Click the  start bold Next end bold  button when you have finished reading these directions and are ready to begin the Interpretive Listening section of the test. Once you advance to the next screen, the first audio recording will start automatically with 90 seconds of silence.

Female: Καλημέρα! Πώς μπορώ να σας βοηθήσω;

Male: Είναι η πρώτη φορά που επισκέπτομαι την Αθήνα μετά από δεκαπέντε χρόνια και θέλω να πάρω μια γεύση από το μετρό.

Female: Είστε πολύ τυχερός! Παρακολουθώ τα έργα του μετρό από το ξεκίνημά του έως τώρα με πολύ μεγάλο ενδιαφέρον. Τι θέλετε να μάθετε;

Male: Άκουσα ότι υπάρχουν εκθέματα μέσα στους σταθμούς του μετρό, είναι αλήθεια;

Female: Ναι, σε έξι κεντρικούς σταθμούς του Μετρό υπάρχουν ειδικοί χώροι όπου αρχαία αντικείμενα εκτίθενται πίσω από καλαίσθητες προθήκες.

Male: Ποιοι σταθμοί είναι αυτοί;

Female: Διαθέτουμε χάρτες της Αθήνας και του μετρό, μπορώ να σας δώσω. Ο σταθμός «Σύνταγμα» έχει πολύ όμορφους εκθεσιακούς χώρους αλλά ο αγαπημένος μου είναι ο σταθμός «Ακρόπολη» που βρίσκεται δίπλα στο νέο μουσείο της Ακρόπολης.

Male: Πολύ θα ήθελα να επισκεφθώ και το μουσείο.

Female: Ναι είναι υπέροχο. Και ξέρετε κάτι; Έχετε τύχη βουνό! Αύριο έχει δωρεάν είσοδο λόγω της «Διεθνούς Ημέρας Μουσείων».

Male: Καταπληκτικά! Τι άλλο μου προτείνετε να επισκεφθώ;

Female: Υπάρχει μια υπαίθρια έκθεση αρχαιοτήτων σε ένα μικρό μουσείο στην Πανεπιστημιούπολη Ζωγράφου με εκθέματα που μεταφέρθηκαν από την αρχαιολογική ανασκαφή του Συντάγματος. Μην την χάσετε.

Male: Όχι βέβαια! Εξάλλου, το ξενοδοχείο μου είναι πολύ κοντά στου Ζωγράφου. Νομίζετε ότι θα τα προλάβω όλα αυτά μέσα σε δυο μέρες;

Female: Νομίζω ναι! Τώρα με το μετρό μπορείτε να μετακινηθείτε γρήγορα και άνετα μέσα στην πόλη.

Correct Response: C. This question requires examinees to determine the meaning and nuances of words and phrases as they are used in spoken messages, including commonly used idiomatic expressions, figurative language, and common colloquial and culturally authentic expressions. The expression να πάρω μια γεύση (to get a taste) in this context means to get an overview. The man was in Athens 15 years ago and he wants to see the major changes that occurred with the construction of the new metro.

Correct Response: B. This question requires examinees to demonstrate the ability to discern and summarize a speaker's key ideas in a spoken message and evaluate the speaker's use of reasoning and evidence in presenting these ideas. The man's interest is primarily focused on the archeological findings that are displayed in metro stations as well as the ancient ruins. He specifically asked the female speaker about the exhibits in the metro (Άκουσα ότι υπάρχουν εκθέματα μέσα στους σταθμούς του μετρό, είναι αλήθεια). The dialogue then moves on to more specific details about the stations and museums displaying artifacts found during the construction of the metro.

3. Η κυρία λέει ότι ο κύριος «έχει τύχη βουνό» επειδή:

  1. ο σταθμός «Ακρόπολη» είναι κοντά στο μουσείο.

This question requires examinees to determine an assumption, an intent, a perspective, or a point of view by analyzing the communicative strategies and social and cultural contexts of a spoken message. The female speaker uses the expression έχω τύχη βουνό meaning "to have a mountain or a lot of luck" to encourage the male speaker to take advantage of the next day's free admission to museums (Αύριο έχει δωρεάν είσοδο λόγω της «Διεθνούς Ημέρας Μουσείων»).

It can be inferred from the female speaker's greeting at the beginning of the conversation (Καλημέρα! Πώς μπορώ να σας βοηθήσω;) and from the male speaker's first lines (Είναι η πρώτη φορά που επισκέπτομαι την Αθήνα μετά από δεκαπέντε χρόνια και θέλω να πάρω μια γεύση από το μετρό) that the male speaker walked into a tourist information booth or office to ask for information about Athens.
